Cool Facts About the Moon

Other than thinking about sleep when we see the moon, there remains to be a lot of things we still don’t know about it. There are several cool moon facts and we continue to get to know the moon better through explorations.

Being the only natural satellite of the Earth, several expeditions have been conducted to better know the moon. The moon is about 238857 miles away from our planet and it is considered as the fifth largest moon in the entire solar system. The moon, just like the earth also has several mountain ranges. Its tallest mountain is named as Mon Huygens which is roughly half as tall as Mt. Everest.

Gravity is always part of the cool moon facts. Basing it on the experience of astronauts and the studies of experts, gravity is only one fifth in strength on the surface of the moon. We always weigh less when we are on the moon because gravity is not that strong compared to the pull of the earth. Because of this, they would appear to be hopping around when they walk on the surface of the moon.

The first successful moon exploration and landing happened in 1969. The Apollo 11 mission, which was launched by the United States carried the first man to ever set foot on the surface of the moon. The space rocket carried Neil Armstrong making him the first man to ever set foot on the moon.

The pockmarked surface of the moon is also visible from the earth. These craters are caused by comets and asteroids that continue to collide to its surface. Because the moon doesn’t have any atmosphere, these objects create a huge impact when they hit the moon.

The scarcity of water on the moon is one of the cool moon facts that the majority of scientists agree on. Contrary to what others think, it would be very difficult for man to thrive on the moon because the place doesn’t have enough water supplies. Of course, there’s the extreme temperature on the surface as one of the primary reasons.

During daytime, the moon can become extremely hot that it even goes past the boiling point of water. During day time, temperature can reach up to 107 degrees Celsius and it becomes abnormally cold at night. You can easily freeze yourself to death when you are on the moon as it can become cold up to -153 degrees Celsius.

The list of trivia and cool moon facts continue to grow as we send more and more explorations on its surface. We still have a lot of things to discover about our only natural satellite and the moon continues to influence the way we live our lives.
